Benefits

Details

Curcumin comes from turmeric. Turmeric has a rich history of use in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine. Turmeric is a perennial plant of the ginger family that is grown throughout India, some parts of Asia and Central America. The “Golden Spice” is used for seasoning and as an herbal remedy. Its root rhizomes get their yellow-orange colour from curcuminoids and also contain essential oils used in Indian cooking.*

Oxidative damage, which involves free radicals, is one of the reasons why we acquire certain diseases and naturally age. Free radicals tend to react with important organic substances, such as fatty acids, proteins and DNA. Like other popular antioxidants such as Vitamins C and E (Co Q-10, Ginger, Green Tea), Curcumin helps fight cell-damaging free radicals in the body. It not only fights the free radicals but it stimulates and strengthens the body’s antioxidant mechanism.*

Curcumin plays a major role in helping with symptoms of arthritis. Many arthritis cases involve some extent of inflammation of the joints. In a study of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, curcumin seemed to be very effective while not having the side effects of commonly prescribed anti-inflammatory drugs. Chronic inflammation is known to be a contributor to many common Western diseases. Curcumin can inhibit many molecules known to play major roles in inflammation.*

Oxidative damage and increased inflammation play a role in Alzheimer’s disease.* The build up of protein tangles called the amyloid plaques are a key feature of Alzheimer’s diseases. Studies show that curcumin helps clear these plaques and can help by decreasing inflammation. Curcumin boosts levels of the brain hormone BDNF (Brain derived neurotrophic factor), which increases the growth of new neurons and fights various degenerative processes in the brain. There is also some evidence that curcumin can boost the brain neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine. A study in depressed patients seemed to show that curcumin was as effective in alleviating the symptoms of depression as certain, commonly prescribed anti-depressants. *

Some studies have linked the prevention of cancer to curcumin supplementation. It can reduce angiogenesis, which is the growth of new blood vessels in tumours and metastasis, which is the spreading of cancer. Curcumin has also reduced the growth of cancerous cells in laboratory experiments while inhibiting the growth of tumours in test animals.*

While there is no conclusive research evidence to show that turmeric or curcumin can prevent or treat cancer, research has also seemed to indicate lower rates of certain types of cancer in countries where people consume curcumin at levels of about 100mg to 200mg a day over long periods of time. Curcumin has beneficial effects on several factors known to play a role in heart disease. It improves the function of the endothelium and is a potent anti-inflammatory agent and antioxidant.*

The ongoing research on turmeric is exploring a variety of benefits including links between skin and hair and the effect of curcumin. *

FAQ

Q: What’s the difference between turmeric and curcumin?

A: Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is the plant that provides curcumin, which is the generic term for the compound from the root of the plant. In supplemental forms, the big difference is that simple turmeric root only contains about 2-5% curcumin. This means powdered products (ground turmeric) do not provide much curcumin. When turmeric is consumed in foods (curries, for example) over the course of many years, there probably is a long-term protective effect against oxidative stress and inflammation. For example, the rate of Alzheimer’s disease in India is 4.4-fold less in India than the United States.1 When considering for therapeutic use, dried turmeric is probably of limited value. The root of turmeric starts out with low levels of curcumin to begin with which is why curcumin is poorly absorbed in the digestive tract. *

Higher absorption translates into higher potency giving a maximum effect, fewer capsule consumption and best optimal support for the body. This is a green technology.*
