Live longer and healthier with a healthy liver – liver is the overlooked organ!*

The liver is most often overlooked in daily, preventative healthcare. People typically treat their cardiac health, bones and joints, beauty and general wellbeing but not their liver.

The liver is a key player in your body's digestive system. Everything you eat or drink, including medicine, passes through it – it is a specialized filter. You need to treat it right so it can stay healthy and do its job. "It's an organ you could easily trash if you don't take good care of it," says Rohit Satoskar, MD, of the MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute. " And once you trash it, it's gone."

Your liver is about the size of a football and sits under your lower ribcage on the right side. It has several important things to do. It helps clean your blood by getting rid of harmful chemicals that your body makes. It makes the liquid called bile, which helps you break down fat from food. And it also stores sugar called glucose, which gives you a quick energy boost when you need it. *

Busting the myths of liver disease*

  • MYTH - Only alcoholics suffer from liver damage - It’s a common liver disease myth: Only alcoholics suffer from cirrhosis, when liver damage leads to scarring. But in reality, the causes of liver disease and liver damage are far more varied than hitting a bottle of Jack Daniel’s® too frequently*
  • MYTH: All causes of liver disease are self-inflicted - Although it’s true that eating too many Twinkies, hitting happy hour daily, and other lifestyle choices may lead to liver disease, some people can point to their gene pool or sheer unluckiness after a diagnosis. Abnormal genes inherited from family members cause genetic liver diseases, including Wilson’s disease. Others can have an autoimmune disorder such as autoimmune hepatitis, which can lead to liver disease, for instance. In still other cases, no one cause can be pinpointed. Sometimes patients don’t even know they have an underlying liver disease, and by the time they do, it’s progressed to cirrhosis *
  • MYTH: Water is the only beverage good for the liver - Water is the magic elixir, according to seemingly every health and beauty magazine, particularly for its ability to wash toxins out of the body. But it isn’t the only one to help keep a healthy liver. Excessive sugar and processed carbohydrates can lead to weight gain, which can contribute to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), in which fat accumulates in the liver despite limited alcohol ingestion *
  • Myth: A liver cleanse and milk thistle supplements alone keep liver diseases at bay *
  • Myth: You can spread hepatitis to others through casual contact - Several types of hepatitis exist, including those caused by viral hepatitis A, B and C and autoimmune hepatitis. But not all types of hepatitis are alike. As for hepatitis B, C and autoimmune hepatitis, having casual contact or sharing food and drink will not spread the infections *
  • Myth: Liver disease patients must avoid acetaminophen (Tylenol) - Acetaminophen, when used as directed, is safe for patients who have liver disease. But too much acetaminophen in a short period can cause toxicity and liver failure, especially when combined with a narcotic medication *

More than 100 types of liver diseases:

More than 100 types of liver disease have been identified. Their common feature is that they all involve damage to the liver that disturbs its ability to function normally. Early liver disease may have minimal or no symptoms and often will be passed over as being the flu. As liver disease progresses, characteristic signs develop. *

Because the liver comes in close contact with many harmful substances, it is protected against disease in two main ways. First, it can regenerate itself by repairing or replacing injured tissue. Second, the liver has many cell units responsible for the same task. Therefore, if one area is injured, other cells will perform the functions of the injured section indefinitely or until the damage has been repaired. Different types of liver disorders include hepatitis, cirrhosis, liver tumors, and liver abscess (collection of pus), just to name a few. The two most common forms are hepatitis and cirrhosis. There is more than one type of hepatitis, and although they have similar symptoms, they're contracted in very different ways, such as person to person, contact, infected blood, vaginal fluids, or semen. Cirrhosis is the final stage of many different forms of liver disease *. Cirrhosis involves permanent scarring of the liver that can severely impact the proper functioning of the organ. That said, the most common liver diseases are:

  • nonalcoholic fatty liver disease/steatohepatitis *
  • alcoholic liver disease *
  • drug-induced liver injury *

The answer to cell repair lies in the gene - the Nrf2 gene and science! *

Cellular stress has negative effects in the human body. It is microscopic cell damage – not visible immediately and to the naked eye. You may not feel the effects of cellular stress until it’s too late. Cell damage is caused by free radicals that disrupt normal function. Cellular stress is inevitable, and it arises from rogue, unstable molecules called free radicals. Free radicals have an unsatisfied electron pair, and they roam the body in search of other compounds and molecules from which they can capture electrons in order to become stable. When free radicals steal electrons from other molecules, the attacked molecule itself becomes a free radical, starting a chain reaction that can damage cells, proteins and DNA. Think of this as an inevitable, chain, damage reaction in your body which manifests lasting damage.*

At the very center of our cellular protective pathway is a protein called “Nrf2” – nuclear erythroid related factor serves as a “MASTER JEDI” of the body’s antioxidant response. You might think of Nrf2 as the “MR. FIX IT” within our cells that senses the level of oxidative stress and other stressors and turns on internal protective mechanisms. The Nrf2 gene repairs the damaged DNA. *

What is the Nrf2 gene expression and how Liver Fit works?

Liver Fit induces the Nrf2 gene expression. When activated, Nrf2 turns on the production of specific antioxidants the body needs to fight cellular stress effectively. Turning on Nrf2 creates a cascading effect that results in the production of several very powerful antioxidants. Several antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione, and catalase are activated through the Nrf2 pathway. *

The foundation of Liver Fit’s science is the “future” of cellular protection and health promotion, this foundation of naturally activating Nrf2 to “solve” the problem of cellular stress is a fundamentally different way of restoring balance in the body. Not long after the identification of this gene, it was determined that Nrf2 binds to and regulates the human antioxidant response element (ARE), a DNA motif located in the upstream promoter regions of many detoxification genes, and therefore mediates the expression of several antioxidant enzymes. *

As a site of first-pass metabolism, the liver is inherently exposed to high concentrations of xenobiotics (substances that are foreign to the body) and other chemicals before delivery to the systemic circulation. Therefore, the liver is equipped with several defense mechanisms for protection against harmful chemicals and their potentially damaging metabolites. Although a variety of cytoprotective mechanisms are present in the liver, it remains highly susceptible to oxidative damage by reactive intermediates. This is a significant human health concern because (i) our ability to protect against oxidative stress seems to diminish with age, making elderly individuals more susceptible to liver injury and disease, and (ii) oxidative damage has been linked to several types of liver injury and disease, including nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), cirrhosis, acute hepatitis, and even hepatocellular carcinoma. In addition, oxidative stress–induced liver injury frequently creates an obstacle in the development of therapeutics because drug candidates often do not proceed to further trials owing to hepatotoxic effects. Liver Fit being the only, natural, probiotic product to tackle oxidative stress-induced liver injury.*

Liver Fit and the other probiotics

  • Liver Fit is the only probiotic available in the market that targets liver disease by inducing Nrf2 gene expression. Tackling liver disease by traditional pharmaceutical therapeutic drugs is a challenge due to hepatotoxic effects*
  • Probiotics are among the most difficult active ingredients to formulate – they are sensitive to heat and moisture. They degrade under the best of conditions and this degradation is unpredictable. When mixed with other ingredients, the rate of degradation increases. So with probiotics it is all about stability. Liver Fit has extensive testing data with proven stability and results*
  • It is a challenge to get the probiotics to survive the stomach barrier. Most probiotic supplements result in insignificant change in the diversity of bacteria in fecal samples, resulting in minimal to no clinical benefit. Liver Fit has been expertly designed by leading scientists trained at the Harvard Medical School, has patented blends and extensive data precisely to ensure efficacy*
  • Bacterial quantities don’t often match what is on the label. Liver Fit has clearly established levels at the time of manufacture to the time of expiry. Most products in the market falsely exaggerate the levels by only showing the CFU levels at the time of manufacture*
  • Several common sources of diverse probiotics are not for all – lactose intolerance is a common digestive problem. So yogurts are not for everyone – Liver Fit is an easy to use supplement – 1 capsule a day*
  • Most commonly available products on retail shelves focus on maximizing the count of Colony Forming Units (CFUs), as many strains as possible, or in media that just don’t work. Liver Fit is a strain-targeted, expertly designed probiotic supplement. *
